Our Library MISSION: The Lake Minchumina Community Library will strive to provide services to everyone in our community. We will be a realiable community information resource and promote educational and recreational entertainment free to all segment of our community. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY...Lake Minchumina is in the shadow of Mt. McKinley. It is said by many visitors that we have the best view of Mt. McKinley and Foraker. Lake Minchumina is located N.W. of Mt. McKinley in interior Alaska and is one of the largest lakes in interior Alaska. The lake itself is about 40 feet deep at the most, but it is 6 miles by 8 miles long! Lake Minchumina is historically important as a portage between the Yukon-Tanana and Kuskokwim River basins. The lake is acessed mainly by small plane but a few people come visit us by boat in the summer. Most of our supplies come in by mail plane or large charted planes. Our libray is located within walking distance of the Post Office and runway. This is very conveinent for all our local and visiting patrons. The library plays a very important role in our community for many reasons. Here are a few...Hang out place, great place to warm up in the winter, excellent selection of books and periodicals for children and adults, computer, printer and internet connections, allows for higher education, community gatherings and holiday celebrations, potlucks, community and Homeowner meetings as well as Ladies Night. Lake Minchumina Power Co. continues to DONATE a portion of our electric bill. Many thanks to the Iditarod Area School District for continuing to allow our library to be in the school building. We are truely gratefull! Our COMMUNITY continues to VOLUNTEER in every way possible. It is only with these combined efforts that our library remains to be functional.
